Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson missed the first practice of July training camp.


According to head coach Mike Tomlin, Wilson woke up this morning with a strained calf muscle. The quarterback was not allowed on the practice field by the coach`s decision.


I decided to give him a rest and created uncomfortable short-term conditions for him. I didn`t want to turn a small problem into a big one, " Tomlin said.


Quarterback Justin Fields, traded this offseason from the Chicago Bears, took all snaps in practice.


Wilson was signed by Pittsburgh to the veteran`s minimum after being waived by the Denver Broncos. The majority of the quarterback`s salary for the 2024 season is paid by the previous club.


Tomlin previously said Wilson was considered the team`s starting quarterback in the preseason.
