Zach Brown commented on the appointment of Andrea Stella as the head of McLaren.
Stella has replaced Andreas Seidl, who is now the chief executive of Sauber, the future Audi factory team now known as Alfa Romeo. The reshuffle was hastened by the appointment of Sauber chief Frederick Wasser to Ferrari.
Andreas, who has been excellent at McLaren in recent years, informed me very openly during the season that he would leave at the end of his contract at the end of 2025.
It was probably pretty obvious which direction he was going in, and that can be understood given his experience [with the Volkswagen concern].
At that moment, we intended to continue working for the foreseeable future, since the relationship is very, very healthy, his work discipline is at a very high level. We were going to tell the world at the end of the season that the changes would come at the end of 2025.
After that, I intended to first call the gentleman sitting next to me - Andrea, and discuss whether he wants to become the head of McLaren. But at that time I was not sure that he would consider this issue.
Things change quickly in Formula 1 and it became clear that Fred was moving to Ferrari and [Sauber co-owner] Finn Rausing is a man I`ve known for a decade, we get along well. He called me to discuss whether Andreas could be released earlier. And I said that I would be happy to implement it if Andrea wants to become a team leader.
Andrea has always been our first choice for the future. So it all happened pretty quickly. I, our riders and the team are very pleased that Andrea became the leader - said the chief executive of McLaren at a special press conference.
Braun also explained why he did not insist that Seidl take a mandatory leave before starting work at Sauber:
We have a great relationship. I know that many teams play the mandatory leave card. I think McLaren has shown that there are ways to end the relationship on quite acceptable terms for everyone - this applies to both riders and employees.
